Black Bird 5 - Sanctuary

The title of the special feature, "Sanctuary", is seiiki in Japanese. The scenes were to be the same as the ones I used in the special feature I did in volume 4, but they weren't exactly the same. I'm sorry...

As the series continues to lengthen, characters that were not scheduled to appear and scenes that were never meant to be featured are making their appearance. I am very grateful for this.

Also, it seems this manga is being read by people of all ages. (The age range of people who have sent me letters and email spans 40 years!) This is completely unexpected, and I must say, I am very fortunate indeed.

The main story will continue in a more serious vein for a while longer. I hope you continue to follow the story.♡

Introduction of new characters.

Ayame Usui
(烏水あやめ)

Age: 23
Height: 162 cm

When I planned the characters, Sagami was supposed to be a married man. From time to time I made mention of someone back home being unwell and he was sent home periodically. Here, for the first time, I've been able to bring his wife into the story.

I enjoy drawing characters as honest as Ayame. Of course, there are those who said it was a surprise that she was Sagami's wife, but I love this sort of couple.

There were some who noticed that the two shared a pair of earrings. Thank you very much.

Renko Jonouchi
(城ノ内蓮子)

Age: 19
Height: 168 cm

She has a name like a Japanese enka singer's. I wanted to create a girl who is in a similar position as Misao but who is her opposite in many ways.

On a previous page (p76), Tadanobu says something that makes him sound like a masochist. But actually, it's Renko who is the extreme masochist, and she, along with extreme sadist Tadanobu, have learned the allure of the other side...

Black Bird has already reached volume 5 because of all of you, my readers!
Thank you very much! ღ

It's fun drawing the kids in costume. Or rather, just drawing the kids is fun.
That reminds me–except for Taro, I haven't done character introductions for the kiddies, or the others in the Eight Daitengu either.
I've completely missed my opportunity. I gave you their ages and heights, but is that enough...?

To tell you the truth, I often forget to draw in the ring that Misao gave Kyo... If you should happen to find a panel like that, I wish you'd think of it as a "Find the Errors" game that I have provided for your enjoyment!! There are also panels with missing earrings or ones where the bloody clothes from the previous frame have been bleached clean... And the reason why Kyo's mansion looks a little different each time it appears is that it belongs to demons!!

As a rule, I, Sakurakoji, write Zenki's lines in the Kansai dialect, but since I'm from the Kanto region, when I'm unsure, I ask a native speaker to edit it. (But at times, I will go for the tempo of the liner rather than for authenticity...)

Chapter 46 (Japanese)

Teaser

There are three dead people in a room. Kyo takes off a cloth from one person and seems to ask if some guy knows that person. I think the guy says that the dead guy seems to be his brother. Kyo seems to be saying that person has changed [in appearance? Become old, it seems]. I think the dead people were the ones found in Shou’s place. They had been determining as to who those deceased people were. The family seems to ask why they died. Sagami is saying about external wounds, vomiting then something about being poisoned by the immortal fruit’s [I think that’s what they call Misao] blood as a drug that Shou made. Then, the family cry and shout something about the immortal fruit. Misao overhears this and she is in shock. I think they would have wanted Misao to just share her blood to everyone so that those people wouldn’t have been ‘drug addicts’ but of course, Kyo refused. He then walks Misao out of the room. The guy whose brother had died kept on saying something. Misao is teary-eyed and Kyo just hugs her to comfort her. As everyone walk out, Sagami tells everyone that the probable culprit as to who knew about Buzen going to Shou’s place is Houki and he believes that Houki is with Shou. Misao is shock by this but it seems that Kyo and Buzen aren’t reacting much. It seems that they aren’t that surprised because Houki has been a bit too ‘coldhearted’ since he was young. When there is blood all over the room, young Houki can still smile and happily read a book. Then, when they [Buzen and Zenki with Houki] were fighting some spider people, they were aghast and uneasy whereas Houki is really calm. Misao really cannot believe this for Houki is really nice, etc. What Kyo is worried about is the seal on Buzen. It seems that if the seal is removed, Buzen would go on a rampage or something.

In prison, Kaede is giving/forcing Buzen something to drink. Buzen is still chained on the wall. Buzen had a talk with Kaede about brothers which includes Kyo-Shou and Sagami-Houki. Kaede then tells him that the first victims that Buzen took when he went on a rampage before are his parents. I don’t quite sure as to whom Kyo stabs in that flashback so I’m presuming that it is Kyo who stopped Buzen then Kaede also mentioned Shou. 小山同學 wrote that Buzen doesn’t remember anything so it is either that is true or Kaede is just saying that to weaken Buzen’s willpower. At Ayame’s room, Misao is saying about Kyo being late. She then sees Ayame shaking her head around as she is dozing to sleep. It seems that Misao tells her to just sleep but Ayame wants to wait for Sagami. When Misao walks around the house, she finds someone outside lying on the ground. While she tries to wake the person up, Houki appears behind her and it seems he is asking how she is and if she’s alone. Houki seems to be asking for some of her blood. Misao seems to be happy to oblige since she also has faith in Houki much like Kyo does. She tells him about Kyo doesn’t want to remove Houki of his ranking. He still believes in the kid who had used to always follow him around. Houki just smiles coldly upon hearing that. In bed, it seems that Misao tells Kyo about giving away the blood which is about a medium sized bottle. [小山同學 is wondering how could a wound from a finger produce that much blood =P] Kyo hits her head then pats her head. He then hugs her. They talk and Misao laughs about something. It seems that Misao thinks of how much she loves Kyo. Kyo then starts licking her finger where she is cut to give away the blood. Then, he is licking all over her body. Kyo is surprised when Misao suddenly pushes him down on the floor. She is on top of him then she blushes so much that she is embarrassed of what she is doing, I think. Kyo then holds her face and asks Misao something. Meanwhile, Houki is saying about how much he is trusted that he got this bottle of blood. He head to the prison and tells Kaede that he came early since he already got the blood. Shou who is standing beside Buzen tells them to withdraw since it is starting. He then puts one of Buzen’s earrings on the floor. Buzen looks dark and sweaty all over.

Well, Misao and Kyo are sure very trusting of Houki and I hope they are right else they would be blamed if something bad that is caused by Houki happens. Houki’s cold smile is making me think that he could be a bad guy. I think Shou ought to be careful of traitors. Oh well, Shou doesn’t seem to be the type to trust anyone but himself. Since these two people are willing to help him so why not. He has nothing to lose and I guess he is quite reckless and obvious in everything he does because he doesn’t really care about himself or he is betting on Kyo and Misao’s niceness that he can get away with it.

Summary

Black Bird 5 is out and on the market. I just came back from my vacation (I went to Switzerland) and bought the book. It's a bit late..

This volume contains chapters 18 through 21, plus a bonus chapter - Sanctuary. Kanoko sensei has been drawing illustrations that fans requested since volume 3 and I saw a couple new illustration requests in this volume. It is always fun to read them. :)
You can read the author's sidebar comments and new character introduction from volume 5. I haven't finished the book yet, but will share with you here sometime soon.

Black Bird 5 OFFICIAL SUMMARY.

STORY THUS FAR
Misao can see spirits and demons, and her childhood sweetheart Kyo has been protecting her since she was little.

"Someday I'll come for you, I promise."
Kyo reappears the day before Misao's 16th birthday to tell her, "Your 16th birthday marks 'open season' on you." She is the Senka Maiden, and if a demon drinks her blood, he is granted a long life. If he eats her flesh, he gains eternal youth. And if he makes his bride, his clan will prosper...

Misao discovers that Kyo is a tengu, a crow demon, with his sights firmly set on her. But Kyo's older brother Sho who was denied the leadership of the Usui clan because of his cruelty, schemes to take Misao for himself. Kyo protects Misao from his brother's machinations and imprisons Sho. Now that his leadership is secure, Kyo's advisors encourage him to bed Misao quickly. But no one knows what the consequences will be if Misao, a human, has sex with a demon... and the answer can only be found in the Senka Roku, a secret record held by the Kuzunoha kitsune clan.

Unfortunately, the Senka Roku is stolen by unknown demons during a battle between Tadanobu, the new leader of the Kuzunoha, and Kyo. Tadanobu warns, "If you want to spend the rest of your life with that girl... you must never have sex with her."

Summary

With Kyo and Sagami watching on, Misao asks Ayame if she is alright. Ayame seems to say that it doesn’t hurt anymore because of the medicine. Then, the three leave Ayame. They talk at the hallway about what’s happening in the village and of course, Shou. Hm..marriage is mentioned and as to which one/who is bad. Anyway, they were interrupted by Buzen who tells Kyo that someone wants to talk with him. It turns out to be some timid guy who is way, way away from Kyo that Kyo has to tell him that his too far. The guy seems to be talking about the attack led by Shou yesterday. He seems to mention on how Shou gives drugs [I think referring to the blood of Misao] to the weak and it seems his brother got addicted or something that now he is in pain. The man asks help from Kyo but Kyo and others can only look tense over this. After the man left, they talk about what Shou has been doing with the drugs, the effects of the drugs, etc. In the end, it seems that everyone is glad that Kyo has decided to help. The scene changes to the kids wherein Misao seems to say that playing is over and they are to head back inside. The monk taking care of them seem to thank Misao for all the help. Zenki also help in bringing them back and it seemed that Zenki is handling the kids a bit roughly – carrying them by their obi/belt in kimono. Misao blushes upon seeing Zenki strip topless and there is a marking/tattoo on his left chest. Misao remembered that Kyo has one before when he was cursed. Zenki seems to be showing that tattoo to the monk for treatment or whatever. Misao then sees Houki nearby. She calls out to him and they seem to talk about the kids – brothers. Zenki approaches them and also talks about blood related brothers. Houki’s eyes look cold. Zenki and Misao are surprised when Houki mentions something about everything is fragile. Zenki’s eyes still look cold then he breaks into a smile and say about Kyo problems and he is going ahead. Zenki seems to mention about problems regarding the brothers wherein Sagami is always following Kyo while young Houki follows Sagami.

I had been thinking as to why Kyo isn’t moving fast enough. He is really taking his time and well, I guess being hasty can be dangerous, too. It makes me think that Kyo has a tendency to act only when problems are already there. He tends to be more reactive. He probably won’t act yet if people aren’t getting hurt and people are pleading him to act. In contrast, Shou seems to be proactive and have laid down his plans beforehand. It does seem that he already know what the other party’s next move. He is indeed a strategist and too bad that he is using it for his own selfish evil motives. Unfortunately, I tend to like intelligent strategists even evil ones and yeah, he looks awesome in that cover for volume 11, I presume. ^^ Shou is really in the criteria of ‘don’t mess with else you’ll be very sorry’. I’m wondering if there is still hope for him to change or the solution for a problem like him is death..probably something else since the author did ‘resurrect’ him. As for Houki, I think his frustration of not being strong enough and jealous over Kyou who is treated more like a brother by his own brother Sagami has made him turn over to Shou’s side. For me, I think what Houki has been looking for is with Shou. I’m not sure if Shou is sincere about it but then, surely, Houki has his own purpose for Shou. Has Houki really betrayed them or is he just spying or is he blackmailed?

Black Bird –Missing– Video + 2 Chapters

We know that Black Bird -Missing- is a light novel by Yui Tokiumi, with illustrations by Kanoko Sakurakoji.

I was thinking of creating a video of the novel and people would read the novel by the text on the video but I thought it would become a very long video and a waste of time so I just created a very short video instead. You can actually read the first two chapters from here.

Although the series does have fans in English, other speaking countries of another languages which very much to read the series, but the novel is just available in Japanese.
There is no official statement that the novel of the series will be translated into English soon. If the novel becomes translated into English, then it will be easier to translate into other languages like Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese so hopefully everyone would be able to read the novel..

"I use the bookstores on the web as they're convenient depending on certain books.
We are fairly close to the warehouse where they are shipped out of and they arrive quickly.
But, the upper box on the photo...this had only one book!
The bottom one had a CD and two books.
I told them it's ok to ship them all when they are all ready when I ordered them...

Hello. It's me, Sakurakoji. My heart is full of gratitude to all of you who have picked up volume 4 of Black Bird! This is already the fourth volume... That was quick.

The title of the special feature is "DECADE," which means ten years. I drew the same scene in a special feature from Misao's viewpoint for Volume 5, so I hope you will read them together.

I am thinking of showing you the steps involved in creating the cover illustration for Volume 4. Don't expect too much, or you'll be disappointed.

My Blog's Stats

Last night, a statistics tool called Blogger Stats was introduced and I checked my stats for the first time. They actually surprised me! I mean, I never knew or thought about how many readers visit my blog each day.. You can tell that I got 5,300 visitors in four days by looking at the above statistics.
This is my first blog ever and I feel awesome! ^^

I enjoy reading the stats about who's reading the blog and where they're from. They remind me Black Bird is pretty popular in other countries.. ^^

New Characters in Volume 3 & 4

Misao's Friends

I had no intention of even mentioning their names in the story, so I wonder why I decided Mana's boyfriend was a college student, and Kana's boyfriend was a former middle-school classmate.

Incidentally, they are not twins.

Misao's Parents

Yoshio (41) and Yoko (44) Harada
(原田好生, 原田陽子)

Yoko and Yoshio were in the same club in college. It took him years to persuade her to be with him. Although it has nothing to do with the story, I wonder why I set this background for them.

Yoko probably met Kyo when he was little. Yoshio's job will probably continue to have connections with this story... I think.

Kiyo Dojoji
(道成寺希世)

Age: 16
Height: 155 cm

There is almost no name more appropriate to a snake! Of course, the name "Dojoji" comes from the legend. (The priest Anchin falls in love with Princess Kiyo who is really a serpent. When Princess Kiyo realizes that Anchin has had a change of heart, she chases him in the form of a serpent to Dojoji temple, where he is hiding inside a temple bell. She burns the bell and the priest inside.♥ The story has become a Noh and Kabuki play.) I didn't think she would have a second appearance.

She seems more a match for Sojo than Kyo...

Kensuke Dojoji
(道成寺権助)

Age: 16
Height: 169 cm

I came up with this name because "Dojoji" brought to mind a temple bell, and the temple bell brought to mind the name "Kensuke." I don't suppose you follow me. I'm talking about A Kabuki play. The name of the character in the play is actually "Gonsuke."

There are so many black hearted villians, so Kensuke was like an oasis to me. Perhaps that is why he is more popular than I expected. It surprised me.

I hope he'll be able to appear again.

Tadanobu Kuzunoha
(葛葉忠信)

Age: 20
Height: 182 cm

The same goes for this one. There is almost no name appropriate for a fox! Both "Tadanobu" and "Kuzunoha" are names of foxes that appear in Kabuki's plays. Kabuki again...

Although he is more powerful than his younger brother Shuhei, he doesn't have the drive. Perhaps he and Kyo got along so well because they were such opposites. Actually, I never thought he would be appearing here....

On a side note, after I finally came to the decision to announce Kyo's age the last time, I got so many comments saying, "He doesn't look it," "I thought he was in his late 20s." That's what I thought too, and that's why I was hesitant to announce it! You probably think the same about Tadanobu, don't you?

By the time the Japanese graphic novel come out, the magazine should be about two chapters ahead. Misao awoke to feel a cold breeze blow over her body. She shivered under her blankets hearing a whispering voice next to her ear.

"It's only me, Misao." Kyo stroked the hair out of her face and looked down at her sleeping face.

"Kyo…" She muttered in her sleep, blushing up a storm. Kyo let out a chuckle bending forward and kissing her cheek.

"I came to check on you…was there someone here tonight when you got home?" He asked touching her flushed cheek. Misao eyes fluttered open a bit, looking at her alarm clock. "It's 3 in the freakin morning!" She thought with a groan.

"Kyo it's 3 in the morning…!" He nodded.

"Yes I know that I was just worried about you-" Misao pushed herself up on her elbows and glared at him with sleepy eyes.

"May I ask why?" He scowled at her, feeling a bit angry with her for attitude towards him. "Here I am trying to protect her from anything and everything and she this is the thanks I get." He thought shaking his head.

"What?" She asked getting more and more irritated with him. She looked to the window and saw it was open and that was cold breeze she felt.

"What now your just letting yourself in now?" She asked a little bit of a hiss in her voice. Kyo pulled back, and glared down at her.

"Well if you wouldn't have been snoring you would have heard me knocking!" He growled. Misao rolled her hands into two fists and glared at him with narrow eyes.

"I do not snore!" She said in a heated whisper. He let out a snort.

"Oh sure you don't-" Misao sent her fist flying towards his face. He jumped back almost colliding with her dresser.

"Dammit Misao-" He asked raising his voice more and more. There was a noise from down the hall.

"Misao honey you alright?" Yoko called from outside her door. Misao looked to the door with wide eyes, then looked back to Kyo.

"I'm fine." She called getting out of her bed and walking to the door. She looked over her shoulder and mouthed, "Go on." to Kyo. He opened his mouth to say something, but she shook her head. He closed his eyes and let out a silent sigh, and nodded. He walked over to her bed and hoped on it.

"I love you, Misao." He whispered. Misao bit her lower lip, biting back the tears that threatened to fall. Misao knew that she was being a total bitch to Kyo. He was only trying to protect her from the dangers of the best way he knew how. She nodded and mouth, "Love you too." and opened the door a crack.

"Hey mom what it is?" She asked with a yawn and began to scratch her bed head. Yoko saw that her daughter had been asleep.

"Oh...did I wake you sweetheart." Misao shrugged with a grin.

"It's okay I had to go to the bathroom anyway." She looked over her shoulder seeing that Kyo had slipped out the window and was probably already at next door by now. Misao opened the door all the way and turned on her heels heading for the bathroom. Yoko walked in felling a tad bit uncomfortable.

"Sweetheart I want to talk to you about something, something important." Misao glanced over at her Mom.

"Sure." She said walking into the bathroom and fiddling around. She really didn't have to go to the bathroom.

"It's about your and Kyo Usui…relationship." Misao bit back a moan. "I knew this talk would come one day." She thought.

"What about it?" She asked feeling her stomach and throat grow tight. "Please god don't let me throw up?" She prayed. She flushed the toilet and walked out to find her Mom looking out the window.

"Mom…you okay?" She asked. Yoko nearly jumped out of her skin, she turned seeing her daughter and giving her a reassuring smile.

"Yeah I'm fine, Misao." She said looking out the window again and the room grew quiet. Misao stood watching her Mom looking out the window for a good 3 minutes before she walked over and gently touched her shoulder.

"Mom?" Yoko gave a small jump and glanced at her daughter, then let out a sigh.

"Oh sweetheart I'm sorry I know I'm freaking you out, but I don't know what to do anymore. It's just that I love your and so does your father and we worry about you so much. We don't want anything to happen to you…." A smile splattered across her face. "You don't have to worry Kyo will protect me." She didn't have the courage to speak those words out loud.

"No worries Mom nothing going to happen to me," She gave her Mom's shoulders a squeeze. "so don't worry about me." Yoko didn't look reassured in the least, but she gave her a smile.

"Okay if you say so...come on get back to bed you got school tomorrow." Misao let out a fake yawn and blinked her eyes smacking her lips pretending she was really tired.

"Alright see you in the morning." Misao said with another yawn, this time this one was real. She crawled into bed and pulled the blankets tightly around her body.

"Night, Mom." She said. Yoko bend down and touched her lips to Misao's forehead.

"Night sweetheart." She whispered. Misao let out a heavenly sigh, falling asleep straight away. Yoko turned and walked out into the hallway, closing the door gently behind her. Yoko stood there for a few moments listening to the sounds from outside and her daughter breathing. "If anything were to happen to you Misao…you have no idea how devastated Yoshio and I would be."

"Yoko what are you doing, come back to bed." Yoshio said from the threshold of their bedroom. Yoko walked down the hall and into their bedroom. Yoshio had already crawled back into bed and was sitting up bare chest, and laying under the covers reading one of his folklore book.

"Was Misao awake?" He asked. She nodded crawling back into bed and settling back down, laying her head down on her husband's bare chest.

"Yeah, but I think I woke her." She muttered letting out a stiff yawn. Yoshio let out a chuckle, kissing the top her head.

"Did you talk to her about…you know." She nodded. Yoshio let out a sigh and closed his book, and began to stroke his wife's back.

"What did you say?" He asked. She shrugged snuggling her head on his chest, making him chuckle. "Yoko don't that tickles," She continued to tickle his chest with her hair. He let out a giggle. "Come on tell what you said." He said kissing her head again. Yoko let out a giggle, sighing a "alright" and then taking a deep breath.

"I just told her what you and I talked about…that you and I worry about her. About her and Kyo Usui's relationship."

"What did she say to that?" He asked with a snort. She shrugged against Yoshio's body.

"She just told me not to worry about her, and that she would be fine." Yoshio let out a snort.

"Easier said then done I'm afraid." She nodded.

"Yeah…yeah I know." She muttered her eyes becoming more and more heavy. She let out a sigh. Yoshio could sense that his wife was on the edge of sleep. So he leaned over switching off the light and pushing himself down so that his head was resting against his pillow.

"Night Yoshio." Yoko sighed her breathing slow and steady. Yoshio smiled at her, even though she couldn't see doing it.

"Night Yoko." He whispered kissing her forehead and pulling her body against his, and then they fell asleep with no worries about Misao, Kyo, or anything else. They slowly feel into peaceful dreams.

Misao awoke to the sun streaming through her window and a chilly breeze wash over her body. "Why is the window open again?" She asked herself. Misao almost hit herself on the head for being so stupid. "Duh you moron you never closed it!" She let out a yawn stretching out her limps and muscles. Her bedroom door was open she noticed and she could smell her mom cook breakfast. She threw the covers off and shoved her feet into her slippers, and walking out into the chilly hallway. "God why is it so cold in here?" She asked herself as she made her way downstairs.

When she walked into the kitchen she was surprised to see Yushin sitting down at the dinning room table. Misao stopped short looking to her mom and dad, and then to Yushin.

"Hey what's going on?" She asked eyeing them all. "What are you doing here?" She asked. Yoko let out a noise of disapproval.

"Misao that's rude we've rose you better then that!" She said, then looked to Yushin. "I'm sorry about Misao manners." He shook his head.

"No I completely understand why she's confused at my presence in your house...again" He said clasping his hands and laying them on the table top. "I've come to see if you would like to walk with me to school." Misao looked at him with a thing of doubt in her eye. "Uh huh, right." She thought. She looked down at her pajamas and let out a gasp. Her pajamas had tears and snags all over them.

"What the hell!" She cried

"Misao!" Her mom cried, jumping her chair and glaring at her daughter. "Watch your mouth young lady!"

"Sorry but look at my pajamas!" She cried pointing down at her pajama top. Her mom let out a gasp walking over and observing her top and looking at the damage.

"My goodness what did you do, Misao." Misao looked up at her mom with wide eyes.

"I didn't do crap! Why in the world would I destroy my brand new pajamas?" She asked her mother. Yoko shrugged.

"I don't know but I think I can sew these up. Just leave it on your bed and I'll sew the cuts and snags up later." Misao nodded thanking her mom, and leaving to change into her school uniform. When she got back down in the kitchen to grab some breakfast she saw that Yushin was eating some breakfast and talking to her dad.

"Your still studying folklore, Mr. Harada." Yoshio nodded with a laugh.

"Yes, but please call me Yoshio." Yushin let out a hardy laugh.

"Okay Yoshio." Then Yushin and Yoshio started to laugh and talk about stuff only a guy could like. Sports, folklore (anybody could like this really), and other stuff that Misao has never really cared for.

"Hey mom-"

"Here honey." Yoko said handing her a bowl of something that smelled really good made Misao's stomach growl. Misao took the bowl, smiling.

"Thanks." She walked into the dinning room and sat down and began to eat her breakfast. Yushin glanced over at her, and smiled. He lifted his hand wiggling his fingers at her. She rolled her eyes and stuffed her mouth full of rice and then looked at the clock hanging in the kitchen.

"Oh great I'm, I mean we are going to be late." She jumped up running her bowl into the kitchen and placing it into the sink. She grabbed her bag from the floor and run down the hall.

"Come on already Yushin!" She called slipping on her shoes. "You don't want to be late for your first day do you?" She asked. Yushin jumped up and ran after, grabbing his bag from the floor, and slipped on his shoes.

"Thanks for the breakfast!" He called.

"No problem, Yushin," Yoko called. "Oh wait Misao your lunch!" Yoko grabbed the box lunch from the kitchen counter and ran after her daughter who had already ran outside.

"Misao wait your lunch!" She called. Misao turned seeing her mom and the lunch.

"Oh thanks mom looks great." She took the lunch from her mom and kissed her on the cheek. "See you later tonight!" She called with a wave. Yoko waved back and then went back inside. Yushin let out a chuckle.

"Your mom is really something." Misao looked up at him and just noticed how tall he was. "He's not as tall as Kyo...maybe Sagami height." She thought, nodding.

"Yeah I know."

"So uh about last night-"

"Misao." Misao turned seeing Kyo walking towards her and Yushin.

"Hey morning Kyo!" She called with a huge smile. Kyo stopped short looking at Yushin.

"Hello who's this with you Misao?" He asked his eyes narrow. Misao let out a nervous laugh and pointed at Yushin.

"Who this, this is Yushin." She said. "He's an old friend of mine from when I was little. It was before I ever met-" She clamped her mouth shut. She could feel the tension in the air between the two of them.

She let out a cry, "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!"

Japanese, U.S. Manga Publishers Unite To Fight Scanlations

The launch of a coalition of Japanese and U.S.-based manga publishers focused on fighting "scanlations," or scanned and translated copies of manga illegally posted online without the permission of copyright holders, shows an industry determined to survive and fight a growing threat. Scanlations were originally placed online by fans at a time when it was difficult to find manga outside Japan, and many publishers believed they seeded the U.S. market and attracted new readers. But in recent years, the practice has been dominated by "scanlation aggregators," sites that host thousands of illegally scanned manga editions, offering them to read for free. These sites attract millions of readers and generate revenue for the sites through advertising.

An international coalition of Japanese and American-based manga publishers have joined together to combat what they call the “rampant and growing problem” of scanlations, the practice of posting scanned and translated editions of Japanese comics online without permission of the copyright holders. The group is threatening legal action against 30 scanlation sites.

The effort brings together the 36 member Japanese Digital Comic Association—which includes such major Japanese houses as Kodansha, Shogakukan and Shueisha—as well as manga publisher Square Enix, the Tuttle-Mori Agency and U.S.-based manga publishers Vertical Inc, Viz Media, Tokyopop and Yen Press, the manga/graphic novel imprint of the Hachette Book Group.
A spokesperson for the coalition said the effort shows that Japanese publishers—who license the majority of manga sold in the U.S.—are taking an aggressive interest in combating manga piracy outside of Japan as well as inside the country. The group charges that the former fan-driven practice of scanlating—begun in the 1970s, fans later began to scan, translate and post manga online at a time when it was difficult to find manga outside of Japan—has been transformed by “scanlation aggregators,” heavily trafficked, for-profit Web sites that host thousands of pirated manga editions and offer them for free to readers.
According to a spokesperson, these sites are among the most heavily trafficked sites on the web attracting millions of visits each month while earning advertising revenues and even soliciting donations and sometimes charging for memberships. The group also charges that pirated manga is now beginning to turn up on smartphones and other wireless devices through the use of apps developed “solely to link to and republish the content of scanlations sites.”
A spokesperson said that “we are left with no other alternative but to take aggressive action. It is our sincere hope that offending sites will take it upon themselves to immediately cease their activities. Where this is not the case, however, we will seek injunctive relief and statutory damages.” The group is also aggressively reporting violations to the “federal authorities, including the anti-piracy units of the Justice Department, local law enforcement agencies and FBI.” While the group has yet to file any lawsuits and has declined to name specific scanlators, sites such as MangaFox and OneManga have long been identified as major scanlation aggregators.
After several years of booming manga sales in the U.S. that drove the popularity of comics and graphic novels in the traditional book market, sales of manga in the U.S. have declined more than 30% from a high of $210 million in 2007 to $140 million in sales in 2009, according to pop culture news site ICv2.com. Many manga publishers and retailers who used to believe that scanlations actually attracted new readers, now blame the sales decline on the rise of giant for-profit scanlation sites that have allowed a new generation of fans to grow up reading manga for free online.
“Go back 2 years and track these sites and you’ll find an inverse relationship between the rise of traffic on these scanlation sites and the decline in U.S. manga sales,” said Kurt Hassler, publishing director of Yen Press and a former graphic novel and manga buyer for Borders Books and Music. Hassler points out that early fan-driven scanlation sites were aimed at making manga available overseas at a time when English translations of manga were rare. Indeed these fan scanlators would remove their online translations when the books were licensed for the English-language market.
That’s no longer the case, said Hassler. “These sites are run as businesses and include direct scans of licensed English-language manga editions. Some even include our copyright notices. We don’t want to have to do this but publishers are now focused on this problem.”

It had been 6 weeks since Sojo showed himself to Kyo and the others. It's been 6 weeks since Mamoru joined Kyo to fid off Sojo future attacks. No telling what he would try next to get to Misao.

"We don't know what is in Sojo's conniving, evil twisted mind." Kyo said his face was washed of all expression. "so I don't want anyone of you to scout alone is that clear?" The Vassals all nodded in agreement. Misao looked to Kyo with a frown. "It must be hard to know that your own brother wants you dead…even worse he wants to do it himself." She thought sighing. Kyo rested his chin in his hand and glanced over at her.

"What's with the long face?" He asked with a sad grin. She just stared at him. "You know good and well why I have a 'long' face." She thought wishing that Kyo could read minds. She shrugged. "Better not say anything." She thought.

"No reason." Misao picked up her tea and took a long sip. He gave a low snort.

"Uh huh, right." Misao almost slammed down her cup of tea, but that would only show him that there was something wrong, and she didn't want that happen.

"No really there's nothing I'm just peachy." Kyo lifted his chin from his hand and stared at her long and good. Then he was up pulling her along with him. She gave a squeak stumbling to her feet.

"H-Huh what's the-"

"Come on I need to talk with you in private." She looked to one of the vassals for help. They looked away acting like nothing was happening.

"Traitors!" She screamed as Kyo half pulling half dragging her. After a few moments of flailing her arms and screaming up a storm and threatening to leave and never come back she gave up, seeing it was no use.

"Are you finished?" Kyo asked with little or no humor. Misao let her shoulder slump in surrender. Kyo gave a dry chuckle.

"Good." Misao wanted so much to slap that nasty little smirk off his face. Kyo pulled her along into a room that was furnished with just a futon and nothing else. "His bedroom-" She spun on her heels.

"No way I'm out of here." She said fleeting to the door. Kyo grabbed her arm and pulled her back in, and closed the door.

"I said we need to talk that's it." Misao didn't believe him for one minute.

"Oh we'll talk alright," She said raising her voice so that everyone the house could hear how much of a pervert Kyo was. "then you'll be pushing me on that futon and having your way with me." Kyo flinched.

"Do you really think I'd force myself on you?" He closed his eyes and shook his head. "I'm not that type of guy, Misao, and you know that." She crossed her arms.

"Oh do I?"

"Where is this coming from?" He asked throwing his hands up in the air. "How could you possibly think that I would do something like that to you…to anyone?" He asked. At that very moment Misao wished that she could take back what she had said. She let out a sigh walking to him and resting her forehead on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Kyo," She took a breath that she needed very, very much. "I'm just so scared at what's going to happen to me-" Kyo turned, Misao falling forward, but Kyo stopped her from bumping her head on his chest. He grabbed her shoulders and gave them a good shake.

"I told you that I wouldn't let anything happen to you, Misao," He had a frown on his face now. "why don't you believe that I can do that?" He asked. She shrugged.

"I know you won't let anything happen to me, Kyo." She felt her eyes start to sting with tears. "but what if it's unavoidable? What if your not strong enough to keep me safe-" Kyo shook her so hard that her head snapped up looking directly into his eyes.

"So now you don't think I'm strong enough to keep the girl I'm in love with safe?" He asked, anger filling his voice. Misao bit the inside of her cheek. "What if he isn't strong enough…what will you do then?" A voice asked deep in her mind. "She'll be dead that's what." A creepy evil little voice answered.

"I don't know if you are capable of keeping me safe from the whole world, Kyo," She bowed her head, looking down at the floor. "not anymore." Kyo let out a huff, releasing her arms.

"I guess I'll just have to prove that I'm capable of keeping you safe." He muttered looking away and down at the futon. Misao got nervous at how long he stared down at that thing.

"Kyo…?" Kyo blinked his eyes refocusing.

"Huh?"

"You okay?" She said touching his shoulder lightly. He nodded.

"Yeah just tired is all." He gave her a small smile. "I bet." She thought looking up at his face, and his lips that were full and very kissable. She stood up on her tippy toes and gave him a long sweet kiss. When she pulled away she saw that she put smile on his face, a pure smile that contained happiness and that little thing you called love.

He pulled her into his arms and embraced her tightly. "Please stay with me tonight I don't want to be alone." He muttered in her hair. Misao felt her whole body grew hot. "What do you have in mind?" Her brained asked a little excited. "Shut up you stupid brain." She thought her mind voice shrill and beyond nervousness.

"Kyo I really need to be getting home." Kyo's hold tightened.

"Please." He pleaded. Misao was stunned down to her core. "He's never been this way." She thought worriedly. She hugged him back.

"Okay Kyo, I'll stay a little while, but then I got to go home, okay?" He nodded with a breath of relief.

"Thank you." He muttered. Kyo released her, pulling her down on the futon next to him. As they laid there Kyo didn't make a move, didn't grope her, or anything. Which surprised her quite a bit.

"Kyo?"

"Hm." He said his voice heavy with sleep.

"Do you love me?" His eyes were fluttering, drifting off to sleep.

"Course I do." He muttered, "I wouldn't be doing any of this if I didn't love you." Then he was fast asleep, snoring low and child like. Misao let out a giggle.

"He looks like a little boy when he's asleep." She murmured. She laid there for a few minutes when she started feeling tired herself. She scrubbed at her eyes to stay awake. "Can't fall asleep here got to get home." She moved over kissing Kyo on the forehead and whispering in his ear.

"I love you too." She got up pulling on her sweater that she had taken off and opened the door slowly as to not wake him up.

"Night Kyo." She muttered closing the door and walking down the hall into the living room.

"Lady Misao something you needed?" She shook her head.

"No I'm just on my way home." Hoki poked his head around the corner from the kitchen.

"Lady Misao do you know if Lord Kyo would like some tea?" She glanced at Hoki then addressed the whole room.

"Kyo asleep." Buzen crossed his arms and sigh in relief.

"That's good he needs his sleep," He let out a yawn. "we all need some rest. We've got to stay on our toes with Sojo running about." Sagami nodded looking as he always did, serious.

"Yes I agree." Zenki cracked his knuckles and rolled his shoulder making them pop.

"Yeah I'm looking forward to kicking Sojo's ass once and for all." Hoki looked at the others with a sad expression.

"What made Sojo hate Kyo so much-"

"Oh come on you know that answer to that question…everybody does." He muttered the last part under his breath, but everyone heard him loud and and clear.

"I know that he was upset when Kyo beat him for the head of the clan but still-" Zenki snorted.

"But nothing he was pissed, pure and simple. Hoki bowed his head even more, and gave a low sigh.

"Yes we know all that, Zenki." Sagami muttered in his serious toned voice. "you don't have to keep telling us the obvious." Zenki glared over at Sagami.

"Well it seems that I keep having to," He said gesturing over at Hoki. "Hoki here can't comprehend why Sojo wants Lord Kyo's head-" Sagami flew across the room grabbing hold of Zenki neck and slamming him into the wall.

"Hoki's just a kid, Zenki," Sagami said through clinched teeth. "he maybe a vassal but no kid should have to go through this." Misao couldn't help to agreeing with Sagami.

"I agree." Misao and Buzen said together. Buzen sent Misao a smile and bowed his head to her. Misao blushed bowing her head, but not bring it back up. "God these people are just to beautiful…they make me blush all the time." Misao thought her head fluttering with emotions that she didn't want in her head at the moment. She cleared her throat.

"Sagami please let go of Zenki," She then looked to Zenki. "and please Zenki think before you open your mouth." Hoki gave a small giggle, and Buzen let out a hardy laugh.

"That's the way to tell em' Lady Misao." Misao giggled putting her hand to her mouth. "Did I just give Sagami and Zenki an order…whoa." She thought amazing herself and the vassals.

"Yes M'Lady." Sagami released Zenki and walked away as if nothing happened. Zenki straightened out his clothes and fixed his glasses back on his nose.

"Ass hole." Zenki muttered turning away and walking down the hall into the room he was staying in.

"So immature." Sagami muttered taking a seat at the coffee table and looking at Hoki who was still peeking in from the kitchen.

"Are you still making tea, I would like some if you are." Hoki let out a gasp.

"Oh course." Then he returned to the kitchen. Misao could hear him humming a song as he made them tea.

"Well I guess I'll be going now." Buzen stood up brushing his clothing off.

"I will escort you home." Misao sucked in a deep breath and was about to decline his offer, but he rose his hand, cutting her off.

"Please Lady Misao let's not make this bigger then it is," He said then he grinned. "besides I think if I didn't Lord Kyo would certainly punish me if I didn't." Misao was about to shake her head and say that he wouldn't, but then saw that Buzen was right.

She let out a sigh, "Fine come on." walking into the foyer and pulling on her shoes. She waited as Buzen pulled on his, and was greeted by Mamoru who was returning from his shift of guarding the gate and the whole perimeter of the house.

"Hey Lady Misao you leaving?" He asked his eyes shining with surprise. She nodded.

"Yeah Kyo fell asleep so I decided to head home."

"Oh that's cool." She liked Mamoru, forgetting the fact that he almost killed her more times then she cared for. One of the reason's she likes him so much is that he talks to her civilly.

"Yeah I'd be leaving more quickly if Buzen wasn't taking his sweet mary mother time putting on his shoes." He gave a wounded insulted sound.

"I'm going as fast as I can." He said pulling on the last shoe. "There all done." He stood up to his full height with succeeded over Mamoru and her own.

"Finally." She said letting out a breath of relief. As Misao opened up the door she could hear someone calling her name.

"Misao? Misao!" It cried out his voice full of worry and panic.

"Seems that Lord Kyo woke up." Buzen muttered.

"Crap!" She whispered pulling the door fully open and running out in the chilly autumn air. "Buzen you stay here and try to get Kyo back into bed, please," She pointed at Mamoru. "you can take me home." Mamoru let out a sigh.

"Fine but I'm not carrying you." Misao let her brow shot up.

"I wasn't asking." Mamoru blushed.

"R-Right." Misao looked at him her brow still touching her hair line. "Why is he blushing?" She asked herself. Buzen began to laugh uncontrollably.

"Oh. My. God." Mamoru punched him in the arm good and hard.

"Ow!" He cried grabbing his arm where Mamoru hit it. "What was that for?" He sake his eyes wide and angry.

"Shut the hell up!" Mamoru hissed through clinched teeth. Buzen let another hardy laugh. Mamoru pulled his arm back to punch him again.

"Okay okay I'll shut up, just don't hit me again, I bruise easily..." He said with a pout, which made Mamoru smile.

"Oh wouldn't think of it my dear Buzen." Buzen took a step back.

"Sorry I'm straight." Mamoru let out a snorted.

"Like I'd go out with you," He said glaring. "you old playboy." Buzen took offense to Mamoru's little remark.

"And what's that suppose to mean?" He asked. Mamoru shrugged.

"Whatever you want it to mean my good man." He then turned heading out the door to take Misao home. Kyo cry out her name again and again.

"Come on!" She shouted behind her as she began to sprint for the gate.

"Misao where are you going come back!" Kyo yelled from the door. She didn't stop until she was outside the gate.

"I've got to get home Kyo," She said waving to him. "or my Mom's going to kill me if I don't get home." Kyo took a step outside walking quickly to the gate.

"You can call her and say your staying at one of her friends houses." She shook her head.

"No Kyo I want to go home." Kyo stopped, froze.

"What do you mean you want to go home?" He asked feeling a sadness pull at his heart strings.

"Come on Kyo I want to go home and sleep in my own bed, take a bath, do my homework." She said bowing her head and then lifting it back up to look him directly in the eye.

"You got to understand that." He took a moment, then he nodded.

"I guess I see your point." She let out a sigh.

"I knew you would." She then ran quickly over to him and stood on her tippy toes in a flash and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. It was sweet and light, and it warmed up both of their bodies.

"I love you." She whispered as pulled away and was now standing flat on her feet once again. Kyo smiled down at her he opened his mouth, but stopped short.

"Same here." Misao giggled and winked at him, then turned on her heels and met up with Mamoru who was already making his way to her house.

"You two make a good couple." Misao smiled over at him as they walked.

"You think?" He nodded.

"An odd couple, but good." Misao snorted not knowing if she should be grateful or insulted.

"Thanks…I think." Then they walked in silence all the way to Misao's house. She waved goodbye to Misao, then opened the door and went inside to smell the spicy smell of curry and rice. She walked a little into the foyer and pulled off her shoes and slipped on her slippers.

"Hello Misao." She looked up to see a very handsome guy walking towards her. "been awhile huh?" He asked with a laugh. She stood frozen on the spot feeling a nagging at the back of her head, but not knowing why.

"Uh hi...who are you?" She asked. "Who is this guy and way is he standing in my house?" She asked herself. There was a loud commotion from the living room.

"That's got to be Misao!" Her Mom said on the edge of having a excited tantrum. She came into he foyer with her Dad close behind her. "Oh Misao sweetie it seems you've already met Yushin Tanaka."

"Yeah I did but I didn't get his name though…" Yushin let out a chuckle.

"Which was totally my fault." He said. Misao's Mom blushed and almost swooned on the spot.

"Uh Mom who is this guy?" She muttered to her Mom.

"Misao that's very rude." She hissed then sent Yushin a smile. "As you might have guessed this is our daughter, Misao." He chuckled.

"I gathered as much." Misao Dad gave a hardy laugh.

"Yes Misao is full of spirit, that's what we love most about her." He said putting his arm around her, and squeezing her shoulders.

"Ow Dad not so hard." Dad gave her a grin. "Don't blow this, Misao." He mouthed. That stole Misao breath away.

"W-What's going on?" She asked.

"You might not remember Yushin honey." Mom said looking to Misao. "you and Yushin use to play together a very long time ago." She tilted her head thinking.

"Me and his father worked together at the unervisty a long time ago. He's now the dean at the unversity that right?" He asked. Yuhsin nodded and then shrugged, and if he didn't care.

"Yeah he is but I'm don't know much about it to be honest." Her Dad nodded.

"Yes of course."

"It's been so long since you two have seen each other. Must have been 12 years ago when you last saw each other." Misao was still in the dark.

"I don't remember him much." Yushin smiled.

"I wouldn't blame you," He said. "I use to tease you and take your ball away." He shook his head. "I was a rotten kid."

"Oh now both of you were just babies, Yushin." Misao did remember something about a little boy she use to play with. "Why is it that I can remember him, but not Kyo." She gave a low snort. "That's right that dill weed Sojo took my memories of Kyo and locked them away." She thought gritting her teeth.

"Jackass." She muttered under her breath. Mom head spun around her eyes wide, completely shocked at the words that just came out of her daughters mouth.

"Misao!" Misao bit the inside of her cheek.

"Sorry Mom." Her Mom opened her mouth again, to scold her for her rotten language, but Yushin cleared his throat.

"It's quite alright ma'am." He said with a chuckle. "I don't blame her, and I've been called worse trust me." Misao Mom sent a glare her way, and then it was gone. Replaced with a smile, she turned her attention back to Yushin.

"So what bring you to our home?" Dad asked stilling holding on to Misao. Yushin bowed his head blushing a bit at what he was about to ask.

"Well you see I just moved back to town and I thought I would come and see my old friend, Misao." He took a deep breath. "And to see if she didn't still hate me so that I could ask her out to dinner." Mom sucked in her breath.

"That would be wonderful, she would love to go." Misao reeled back. When did her mother turn into her automative answering machine. Misao rose her hands.

"Whoa wait a minute who says I wanted to go." Her Mom turned around glaring at her.

"Misao that's so rude we raised you better." Misao returned her mother's glare.

"Yes you did and you also taught me to speak up for myself, and I'm saying I'm not going."

"Yes you are."

"What gives you the right to think you can decide for me!" She shouted.

"I'm your Mother that's why!" She shouted back.

"Well I don't care I'm not going out with Yushin and that's it!" She yelled her voice echoing off the walls.

"Yes you are and that's final!" Misao took in a deep breath.

"Why should I!" She screamed.

"Because I said so!" Misao opened her mouth feeling her eyes sting with tears. She looked to her Dad for help. He wouldn't even look at her.

"This is so unfair," Misao said stomping her foot. "I have a boyfriend." Yushin flinched.

"Oh then that changes things." He said completely uncomfortable. Misao Mom turned facing him again.

"Why should it it's not like you were going to ask her to be your girlfriend." Her Mom chuckled then it was cut off by Yushin's silence.

"Oh." She muttered.

"Yeah." Misao was stunned. "He was going to ask me to be his girlfriend?" She asked herself surprised.

"God this day get's better and better." She rolled her shoulders, her dad's arm falling from them. "It was very nice seeing you again Yushin, and if you'll please excuse me I've got homework to do." She walk up the stairs and could hear as her parents said their goodbyes to Yushin.

"God why does this crap keep on happening to me?" She asked herself letting herself fall onto her bed. So many thoughts and feelings bounced around her head, and she didn't like it one bit. She curled up into a ball on her bed and began to cry.

"Why can't things just go back to the way they were." She muttered into her pillow tears staining her pillow. She let herself cry for god knows how long. Soon there were no more tears left to cry and she was breathing regularly and slow with sleep slowly coming on strong. Just as she closed her eyes there was a soft knock on the door. She let her eyes open a crack.

"Who is it?" She asked with a soft sleep filled voice.

"It's me, Yushin." The sleep was gone in a flash, and she was up and walking to the door.

"What do you want?" She asked.

"Not having to talk through a door." He gave a nervous laugh. Misao bit her lower lip and nibbled on it. "Come on Misao I won't bite." He said with a chuckle. "Is it a conscience that he moved back with all that's happening with Sojo?" She asked herself. "I wouldn't take the chance." A sweet voice said deep in her mind. A evil little chuckle sounded. "Oh I would." The evil little voice said. Misao swallowed, a lump that was cutting off her speech.

"Fine." She opened the door a crack and looked out into the hallway seeing Yushin leaning against it. He pushed himself off the wall and stood with his hands behind his back.

"What do you want?" She asked glancing down the hallway but not seeing either of her parents. He cleared his throat. "He sounds nervous." Misao thought not letting her guard down. "He could be a spy for Sojo, you never know." She held herself back from nodding her head.

"I was wondering if you would go out to dinner with me." Misao opened her mouth to remind him that she has a boyfriend, but he rose his hand.

"Just as friends of course." He said. Misao looked at him through the crack. "Come on girl you can find out if Sojo sent him here to spy on you!" She nodded.

"Okay but just as friends." He smiled.

"Right that's what I said." Misao sighed.

"Alright fine when?" He thought for a moment.

"What about tomorrow after school."

"Your still in school?" She asked. He nodded.

"Yeah I'm only a year older then you," He said with a laugh. "We'll probably run into each other at school. You want to meet each other after school at the gate?" He asked. She shrugged.

"Okay I guess." He gave her a happy smile.

"Alright well I'll see you at school." Misao gave a small smile sending him on his way. She closed the door saying goodnight and goodbye to Yushin, then flinched.

"What am I going to tell Kyo when I see him tomorrow?" She asked the air heavy with guilt. "He'll think I'm cheating on him or something. God why don't I think these things through!" She said raking her fingers through her hair.

"Why do think's have to be so darn complicated!" She yelled throwing herself on her bed once again and punching her pillow with two fisted hands.

"I hate my life!" Her cries muffled by her pillow. What she didn't know was that there were a set of black crows watching her from her window.

"Oh that poor dear." Sojo muttered from his hideaway stroking a big black crow and the crow let out a sound of joy and pleasure from the stroking. "that's enough my pets come back and we will plan out our…next brilliant plan." He let out a laugh of pure evil and continued to stroke his lovely crow.

Hey everybody this is BookCharmer and I know your probably wondering why I've ended What a way to find out. Well I thought it would be best to start a new story were the plot and story are changing. What a way to find out was all about Misao's Dad seeing her kissing Kyo. That was long over, and now Sojo has returned to finish what he started. A whole new story and plot. Disappeared Manga from Mangafox

The manga publishers who have banded together to form an anti-piracy group have scored a direct hit on one of the biggest manga scanlation sites: A MangaFox administrator announced in a forum thread that they have pulled a number of manga, and a list of deleted titles shows they are mostly from Viz Media.

We feel so sorry to inform all of you that we close some of the manga temporary due to copyright issue, such as Naruto, Bleach and etc.

An international coalition of Japanese and American-based manga publishers have joined together to combat what they call the “rampant and growing problem” of scanlations, the practice of posting scanned and translated editions of Japanese comics online without permission of the copyright holders. The group is threatening legal action against 30 scanlation sites.

The group charges that the former fan-driven practice of scanlating—begun in the 1970s to scan, translate and post manga online when it was difficult to find manga outside of Japan—has been transformed by “scanlation aggregators,” heavily trafficked, for-profit Web sites that host thousands of pirated manga editions and offer them for free to readers.

According to a spokesperson, these sites are among the most heavily trafficked sites on the web attracting millions of visits each month while earning advertising revenues and even soliciting donations and sometimes charging for memberships. The group also charges that pirated manga is now beginning to turn up on smartphones and other wireless devices through the use of apps developed “solely to link to and republish the content of scanlations sites.”

A spokesperson said that “we are left with no other alternative but to take aggressive action. It is our sincere hope that offending sites will take it upon themselves to immediately cease their activities. Where this is not the case, however, we will seek injunctive relief and statutory damages.” The group is also aggressively reporting violations to the “federal authorities, including the anti-piracy units of the Justice Department, local law enforcement agencies and FBI.” While the group has yet to file any lawsuits and has declined to name specific scanlators, sites such as MangaFox and OneManga have long been identified as major scanlation aggregators.

After several years of booming manga sales in the U.S. that drove the popularity of comics and graphic novels in the traditional book market, sales of manga in the U.S. have declined more than 30% from a high of $210 million in 2007 to $140 million in sales in 2009, according to pop culture news site ICv2.com. Many manga publishers and retailers who used to believe that scanlations actually attracted new readers, now blame the sales decline on the rise of giant for-profit scanlation sites that have allowed a new generation of fans to grow up reading manga for free online.

“Go back 2 years and track these sites and you’ll find an inverse relationship between the rise of traffic on these scanlation sites and the decline in U.S. manga sales,” said Kurt Hassler, publishing director of Yen Press and a former graphic novel and manga buyer for Borders Books and Music. Hassler points out that early fan-driven scanlation sites were aimed at making manga available overseas at a time when English translations of manga were rare. Indeed these fan scanlators would remove their online translations when the books were licensed for the English-language market.

That’s no longer the case, said Hassler. “These sites are run as businesses and include direct scans of licensed English-language manga editions. Some even include our copyright notices. We don’t want to have to do this but publishers are now focused on this problem.”

Summary

Misao is very upset after meeting with Sho and cries. Kyo finds her washing her tear-stained face and talks her out of her depression, assuring her that he'll always be there. The both of them talk about how the war/fight will be prolonged and affect the rest of the spirits world and Misao feels rather useless for not being able to do anything but cry. Kyo tells her that her tears in turn allow him to save his own tears. Kyo hugs Misao tenderly to his chest while she cries. The next day, Kyo receives some bad news which affected him badly, and he went out in his tengu battle form to confront the issue. Misao isn't aware of the details and she goes out with Tarou because there's talk that the atmosphere is rather weird and it appears to come from the Hiyoku place. There, Misao finds a group of young children gathering around and she goes up to find out the problem. It turns out that a fox - Kogin chan - is badly injured and apparently that was part of the reason why Kyou left in such a hurry, and it was to fight and save Kogin chan. Misao gently picks up Kogin chan when Kaede arrives and the both of them exchange words. Kaede has a bone to pick with Misao as in the flashback, it seems that she likes/feels something for Kyou when he was still young and training to become much stronger. But he always looking to the front, looking towards a particular female of his heart. She incites the little children's unhappiness and directs it at Misao for small youkais like Kogin chan are merely underlings of the great Tengu clan. In fact, the Tengu, and the people in the higher ranks such as Kyou should not be friends with those underlings, and the fact that Misao is still carrying Kogin chan defies that particular boundary. In turn, the children get quite angry with Misao and tells her not to carry Kogin chan any longer and not to be friends with the underlings.

Misao realises what Kaede is trying to do and asks if this is the sort of world that Kaede wants, a world of chaos which would increase the number of orphaned children and have unhappiness and misery consume everybody. Kaede tells Misao that she's not concerned about such consequences. Their confrontation doesn't reach any resolution and Misao leaves a parting shot saying that for both Kyou and her, they have their ways to fight back again the dark side of Shou and his underlings . Because of Misao's presence, everyone wants her blood and this causes a split in the demon world where the fires of burning hate burns stronger by each day on the enemy side. Back in the house, people are looking for Kyou but they can't find him. Suddenly, Misao is yanked into a corner by Kyou. Misao asks him what he's doing and he replies that he just wants to reconfirm something and makes a move to go. Misao tells him to wait and pulls him down for a kiss which surprises him, then she lets him go. This moment is really tender as both know that Kyou will soon go out to face confront the enemies. Outside, the enemy forces are pressing closer to Kyou's home and Kyou steps out to fight them. Some guys from the enemy camp rush towards him but with a wave and some blinding light later, those guys become conscious of their fallen comrades and their resolve is wavered as they are sort of afraid of Kyou's power. The group retreats and reports to Shou and then Shou fiercely says that he'll crush them. This chapter ends with him saying if he should go and drop 'that pair of brothers'.

I have always been impressed with Black Bird's cover arts, but this is definitely the best cover. I find it just stunning.

I love the way Kyo looks at Misao.. I really do. It is making me want to stare at it. Their eyes seem like telling us a lot of things... It is really eye catching and unique I could stare at this all day.
My dear Kyo and beautiful Misao, why are you looking so sad...?

This artwork is impressive. Black Bird's cover arts are always interesting and attention grabbing; it is easy to tell this author's artistic work from others as others do not draw the eye in the same way. I appreciate the author's artistic talent! :D

HERE you can see the author's art-making process of the cover of Volume 4.

This volume continues to question what will happen when Misao marries Kyo, will she be spirited away or live peacefully with him? Will she still be able to enjoy the lives of her friends and family members or never see them again? Unfortunately, those questions are not answered within this volume, much to my and many readers displeasure, but many new, interesting relationships emerge in this volume, that allow a greater understanding of all the forces that affect Kyo and Misao's relationship. As with the other volumes, the artwork, plot, and characters will quickly draw you into the story and this like the other volumes is worth possessing a copy of your very own.

I haven't been posting very much to my blog lately. I apologize for being slow to update my blog, but last April was a very busy month for me... Soon I will have more time to care for my blog and my network activities. Absolutely can't wait for summer vacation! Anyway,

Chapter 41

Summary
We will travel to Misao's childhood memories again, which we have never seen before. She confuses that she still has sealed memories with Kyo's brother. It is strange that Sho is being really nice to help her to recall her forgotten memories. I wonder if he wants to "play" with Misao again or has another "evil" plans... Though Misao has been through sad and difficult situations, she still loves her sweetheart, Kyo. But there are a lot of things encountered and hindered their love.

Chapter 42

Summary
Now the story is going to darker side. It seems like things are getting difficult. Sho is trying to make people addicted to Misao's blood. He uses the robe stained with her blood to feed a lot of people, and now everyone is struggling for heroine's blood. No wonder they want to get power from Misao.. I think Sho is using it just for himself and that is why he could survive the earthquake. Since Misao's blood affects people so strongly, Sho never have to worry about the fact that the robe would eventually "finish". Now the only people left who won't attack Misao are Kyo's servants and the kids. How terrible is that...

No new titles in this week's New York Times Graphic Books Manga Bestseller List, as most of last week's top 10 just played a round of musical chairs.

Perennial powerhouse Naruto pushed the latest volume of Bleach down a notch to reclaim the #1 slot, while Black Butler and Soul Eater leap-frogged over the rest of last week's top 5 to muscle their way into the #3 and #4 spots respectively.

Also back on this week's chart is a new favorite in the world of dark and dysfunctional supernatural romances, Black Bird by Kanoko Sakurakoji, which returns after a week's hiatus from the top 10. Look for major shifts next week when the long-awaited Twilight graphic novel makes its way onto the charts.

Okay, quick update to let everyone know that I have re-uploaded chapters 38 & 39 and changed the download links. Thanks for all the e-mails and comments letting me know there were some pages missing.

And long-waited chapter 15 of Japanese version uploaded. If you want to download high quality scans of the book (not magazine scans! and including bonus pages), I uploaded them as well. MORE INFO FROM HERE.

Chapter 40 (Japanese)

It starts with Kaede, Kyo’s cousin/female servant of Sho bringing Misao to some childcare center. The children happily greet her because they seem to know who she is. Misao hug a child and seems to think about something about kids being in this kind dangerous world. Then, a child is crying. It seems when Misao touched the child’s stomach, he feels a bit well. Kaede tells something to Misao that seems to make her think that her touch can help people. Kyo comes in to find Misao being ‘glomped’ by kids.

I think Kyo warns Misao to be careful of Kaede. Then, Kyo had a talk with Kaede who seems to tell him that she isn’t that close to her father. She says something which made Kyo a bit frustrated. Then, Misao talks with Sagami’s wife [wife, right? Forgot already] regarding her fears and stuff. Then, some people appear asking Misao to give her blood to some sick person. Kyo enters to stop the ruckus but Misao starts acting a tantrum regarding blood = painful? Kyo looks surprised. She then did some flirting move [leg up on Kyo’s shoulder] on Kyo and says something which made everyone blush except Kaede.

Another guy is causing some ruckus that Kyo made him ‘fall asleep’. Then, Kaede sees Kyo with Sagami. She is about to call Kyo but she overhears somewhat blushing Kyo talking to Sagami about Misao. Kaede walks away dejected and goes to Sho’s place. She seems to report to Sho what happened earlier that Sho decides to do something else. Sho tells her to get something. Kaede gets a box with the word ‘seal’ in front. Sho unseals it. It contains some ripped clothes with blood on it. He smells it and says it is fragrant and something about akayashi. I think he then mentioned about severing Misao and Kyo’s strong bond and something about sealing/sealed memories of Misao. Kaede seems to be quite good at doing this secretly..she seems to be helping yet there is a hint of ulterior motive to it all. Bring Misao to see those sick children so that she cannot help but want to help them. She would also know what the parents feel of wanting their loved ones healed.

People who desperately want to protect someone can be quite scary at times that they cannot see reason but to get what they want. Of course, they haven't thought about the consequences of giving her blood to them else why would Kyo's own retainers do not want it. I wonder for how long Misao and Kyo can hold off those people from becoming aggressive. Temporarily, I guess that 'flirting move' of Misao worked =P That's good because it makes her less like a 'damsel in distress'. If all of this is Sho and Kaede's plan..it's pretty good. Just as I thought, Sho has revised his way of destroying Kyo. There is no need to do this upfront which can make the people angry at him. He can discredit Kyo this way as if he wants Misao's blood all for himself. It seems that they are going for phase 2 of their plot. I wonder if I understood Sho’s plot right which I think might make Misao distrustful of Kyo. Also, I find it somewhat odd that Kaede becomes overly sad in that part when she wants to greet Kyo. Could it be that she actually likes Kyo? Her earlier plot does seem to be more aimed at Misao - to cause her distress, etc rather than for Kyo. If it is that then, it seems like a cliche love polygon a couple who wants either one of the 'official couple' by teaming up to do bad deeds.

In chapter 39, Misao and others learn about the extermination of the whole Nue clan. They wonder who could have done it as Buzen details what happened to the Nue clan. Misao had a bad feeling and asks if it is possibly that it is Sho because of a same goal. They didn’t reply so it reinforces Misao’s feeling that it is true. Then, there is a mention about Kyo’s father going to that village. Then, Kyo asks Buzen something about his parents. Buzen mentioned about the past wherein he met a beautiful woman and was really blushing over her beauty until Sho came and told Buzen that she’s his mother. He mentions that Yo is always silly and smiling but he is strong when fighting.
Kyo seems to be saying something somewhat funny to Buzen based on Misao’s silly expressions. They were interrupted when Sagami arrives with news from their village. Sho has come back to the village carrying a bloodied wooden container which has the severed head of the leader of the Nue clan. This confirms to them that Sho is the one responsible for the extermination and I think he wants to talk with Kyo. Misao is really nervous about this development. It seems that Kyo is taking her with him to the village. I’m not sure if it is for her protection or to protect her family. Without the knowledge of her parents, Misao packs some of her clothes and stuff in a bag. The next day, Kyo and others arrive in the village. People are blushing as they talk about Kyo and Misao. Kyo seems to be complaining something regarding Sho. They arrive at a residence wherein a woman with sleepy-looking eyes meets up with them. She then leads them in, where Sho is. It seems that Kyou knows the woman but can’t remember where he has seen her before. They go inside and see Sho standing near the bamboo groves. When Sho turns around, Kyo and the others felt a strong pressure/aura from him. Sporting an eye-patch, Sou greets his brother. Kyo seems to be thinking about the possibility of Sho finishing up the Nue clan by himself. It seems that Sho is telling them something about what happened afterwards before but there is the kanji of ‘regret’ so I’m assuming that he killed off their enemy as a way to get back into the village and ‘win people’s hearts that he have changed’. Misao seems to be really bothered about Sho losing his left eye because he pushed her away before as the house collapsed..she’s not sure if he did it to save her. Sho notices her and smiles sweetly at her..probably saying that it’s nice that she’s fine. Misao looks really tense and scared that she is gripping Kyo’s coat too tightly that Kyo has to mention about it to her else she tear his coat. It seems that Misao grabbed his coat again that Kyo looks a bit flustered over Misao’s reaction.

Then, there is some talk between Kyo and Sagami as Buzen leads Misao somewhere where she’ll stay. In the bedroom, Misao is blushing really red. She glances back and there is only one futon. She thinks that they will be together like that everyday, while staying there. When she hears Kyo entering, she quickly pretends to sleep but she can’t fool Kyo =P I think he mentions about her gripping his coat while they are talking with Sou. He holds her hands up and disrobing her. He is saying something and the only thing I can understand is ‘cute’. She is just teary-eyed and blushing really red then before she knows it, Kyo falls on her and probably tells her not to look like that in front of Sou. He covers her face and says something before kissing her and soon, that leads to some love-making. It seems that Misao senses that Kyo is really uneasy. She wakes up to find Kyo gone. She seems to be unhappy about this or something. Tarou mentions about her wanting to take a stroll. Misao says that she wants to go alone. She then sees the woman earlier, who lead them to Sou, carrying a lot of stuff so Misao approaches her and offers to help. She is saying something then, later on, Misao is walking with her. Around this time, Kyo suddenly realizes who that woman is. She is the daughter of Rou/lang – ah, the guy with Kyo’s mother before whom I think is Kyo’s mother’s brother = Kyo’s uncle. So, that woman is Kyo’s cousin and the one mentioned before as dead is actually that guy.

Nobody knows why I, who wrote that yesterday, am in charge of cosmetics at the "Present you with [manga] artists' favorite items" corner with the frontispiece on BetsuComi, which is out today. Chanel is very handy, but if [I see] a highschool girl use it, I'll slap her in the face.

"The photo above is the illustration on the title page, whose part I showed you in the article as of Jan. 27. He is Kyo, despite that he wears glasses.
As for the main stoty, Misao and Kyo are actually not very closely involved, but somehow there's this impression that they keep flirting...
In the middle of the story, Misao wears something like a muumuu...
It's really difficult to pick the right screentone... *sob*
Oh, the fan page(s) on this issue is splendid.
Next issue will come with a Black Bird cover, and open with colored Black Bird story!

This chapter has a really gloomy atmosphere. It looks like things are going out of control... Now that the other demons/spirits are so strong that they have been able to hurt the servants so severely. Kyo actually didn't kill his brother, which means he is still alive. He might take advantage of this situation and strike.

The badly injured servants and the destruction of a village at the last page all signify something dark is going to take place in the future chapters... It looks like it is going to be a war between brothers. Misao will have a hard time dealing with this.. because she is also part of the reason why this had happened.

The story is about Kyo's parents. She was a lot younger than him, and knew him since she was a kid. We know who Kyo's father really is.., but it looks like Kyo has the totally wrong idea about his father.
Kyo's father was a nice and quiet tengu, until his wife made a terrible mistake. He should have probably taken her life according to that world's rules, but they were deeply in love with each other. Everyone thinks that he killed his wife, but now the mystery is, did his wife commit suicide or was she murdered? It looks like he lost his temper just that time with his wife, while Kyo gets upset all the time.
It really breaks your heart seeing how Kyo's father lost hope, when he'd have loved to have a big happy family with his wife, sons and grandchildren.

Chapter 36 (Japanese)

In Black Bird 36, Misao goes to Kyo’s house and is called by Kyo’s father to have tea with him at the porch. Misao accepts his invitation but it seems that she is a bit cautious of him. There is a mention about Kyo’s mother who supposedly died of illness. I think she asked why Kyo is so cold at times. He didn’t reply. I think she also asked something about him (father) perhaps why he appeared now. He also didn’t reply and just gives her a silly grin. Misao is a bit displeased then he says about something that he’ll like for her to know. They were interrupted when furious Kyo has just torn a tree branch with his own hand. He quickly grabs Misao and takes her away. Tarou cries over the branch while Kyo’s father looks sad-smile. Kyo doesn’t seem to want Misao hanging around with his father. Soon the two are in some sort of argument [not serious/teasing type] regarding asking things with Kyo’s father. Anyway, Misao wants to confirm it with the father but Kyo stops her. Sagami asks Kyo about school and he mentioned about some meeting. I think they talk a bit about the traitor, about Kyo’s father and some rumor. Misao is teary eyed about this and Kyo doesn’t look to happy. Sagami seems to want to talk with Misao alone so Kyo left. Sagami tells Misao that five years ago on a rainy night, Kyo’s mother had died and it seems that she has been given some poisoned drink. Then, after that, Kyo’s father disappeared. Misao is nervous when she heard that for she thought that the mother died of illness. It seems that the suspect was Kyo’s father who was assumed to have escaped after killing his wife. Then, there is a short conversation between Kyo’s father and Buzen. It started with thanks for taking care of Kyo then Buzen asks something regarding ‘willpower/determination’ and Kyo’s father looks dark. Elsewhere, Zenki and Houki are busy getting rid of evil spirits in humans. They mentioned about the police and wonder who’s the culprit causing all of this.

It is getting scarier in each scene. This chapter makes us confused. I don't know if Kyo is playing around with Misao's feelings, intentionally or not. At first, he doesn't seem to want to do anything with her nor comfort her with all that hallucination she is having then when someone else is going to 'take her away', he becomes possessive and everything. Misao's emotions are going on some wild rollercoaster ride. Maybe she should have more trust in Kyo because after all what they have gone through, will he be doing that?

As for the hallucination thing, I wonder if it is also because the demons are possessing humans that made her shaken up. It is effective since they probably have spies and know how kyo is treating her so if she makes a mistake and leaves him, she can easily fall into their hands.

In the last part, it seems that Kyo is indeed restraining himself from doing things further (making love to her again) but then, it's good that Kyo seems to act like he used to again. I guess those tears are now tears of joy and assurance from Kyo. Finally, Kyo realize that it is good to tell her his misgivings and apprehensions whatever they maybe else, Misao will let her imagination go wild, hurt each other more, drift apart from him and finally, he might lose her.

I wonder if this concludes the arc with Misao choosing to still go with him and it seems to be a new arc about Kyo's father whom he doesn't seem to have a good relationship with.

Personally, I'd prefer fly with a tengu. ^^ I've been dreaming of flying since I nearly drowned when I was six.

Childhood Sweethearts

Most of the manga I've read are about childhood lovers. I think those kind of stories attract me easily ♥.

Misao and Kyo, the main characters of Black Bird, reconnect after 10 more years. Misao is the bride of demon prophecy, and her blood grants incredible powers, her flesh immortality.. Kyo's family and the whole clan actually knew she would have been the bride of Kyo's older brother, Sojo, because he was supposed to be the head of the clan.

While I was reading Volume 2, I thought Kyo's grandfather was pretty nice to humans, and he preferred Misao to live, rather than being eaten. After he noticed Misao picked up Kyo from the start and sticked with him, told Kyo that he should be the clan leader.

In Chapter 8, while Kyo and his vassals are looking for Misao, Kyo comes first, faster than the others. He is the leader and has special powers. And he is more powerful than others.

Even if Misao married Sojo, he wouldn't have taken care of her, and protected her. In his mind, she is not that important. He only sees Misao as a delicious food. Sojo was the only one who sealed away Misao's memory, but she still remembered a little about only Kyo. Now her memories fully returned, and then she realizes how much at that time she has always loved Kyo, and she tells him that she loves him.

In their sweet childhood times, Kyo figured out that he shouldn't be with his brother's bride, and tried to kept distance from her. But it didn't work. Misao was attached to him already...

I hope we will see Misao & Kyo's childhood story again!! They are so lovely! ♡

Black Bird vs. Twilight

I went to watch Twilight Saga: New Moon with my friends. The movie started at midnight and it was so awesome! Everybody was talking about Taylor's shirtless body >shy<.

Anyway, I was thinking about Black Bird while watching New Moon, and I tried to focus on similarities. Though there are vampires and werewolves in Twilight saga, there's no vampire or werewolves in Black Bird.

I've heard a lot of people talking about Black Bird's resemblance to Twilight. I will list some similarities and differences.

Similarities:
Human girl,
male heroes,
monsters (vampires/demons),
good looking monsters,
monsters are like half humans and half monsters,
special powers of monsters,
the most desirable blood of human girl,
love between human and monster;
if a human girl chooses monster, she must leave her human life and her soul would be taken away.

Differences:
Tengu have wings, vampires have fangs;
vampires, werewolves in Twilight, tengu (half crow, half human), shirohebi (white snake), kitsune (fox) in Black Bird;
Misao and Kyo are childhood lovers;
vampires don't get old, and they never sleep,
vampires are immortal,
vampires satisfy their hungers by drinking blood, tengu eat food just like normal people;
tengu get power to kiss and lick wounds,
tengu have ability to heal wounds by licking;

These are just a few I feel like listing. Anyone out there have an opinion either way?

I wrote about how much I love her manga and made videos about Black Bird... Actually I wrote a lot of things ^^
I asked if Black Bird 9 was the last volume of the series, and she said the series is ongoing and it will not end in nine volumes. What a relief... I'm happy :).

Misao is falling for Kyo, but she still can’t be sure whether Kyo actually loves her for herself because she's the bride of prophecy. The answer to this question arrives in the form of Kyo’s vassals, the eight daitengu, a group of young men who’ve got intimate knowledge of Kyo’s past, his real feelings for Misao, and how hard he worked to become clan leader so that he could have the right to claim her as his bride.

The eight daitengu all look outrageously beautiful. One of them is Kyo's older brother, Sojo, who would have become leader.
